Zig-Zag Live Enters Finals Crunch
April 10th, 2008
Voting for Round 1 of the 2008 Zig-Zag Live Band Competition has officially commenced today. It’s been narrowed down down to nine worthy finalists from a fleeting pool of musicians, spanning various genres.
This year’s remaining candidates comprise an eclectic mix of talent, like Tucson-based rockers Mostly Bears—an experimental prog-rock group that won “Best New Band” at the Tammies, Tucson’s version of the Grammys—and the Barbados-based David Kirton Band—an alternative reggae group that swept the Barbados Music Awards in 2008, winning Reggae Artist Of The Year.
In line with last year’s competition, these artists are vying for a grand prize to jump-start their career, featuring an opportunity to play the CMJ Music Marathon 2008 in New York this October, as well as a $2,000 cash prize and ads in CMJ New Music Report, CMJ New Music Monthly and the CMJ Music Marathon Festival Guide. Get yourself acquainted with the finalists, listen to their music and make your opinion heard by April 30 to vote for your favorite!
Finalists:
A Brief Smile
Billy Joe and the Dusty 45s
David Kirkton Band
Dignan
the Frontier Brothers
Honey Claws
Kid Theodore
Mostly Bears
Sparky Quano.

Larry at Future Sounds listed us as one of his bands to see during SXSW. Thanks, not sure if you made the show…Check out their compilations they’re sick…

Here are some pics from our Apple bar show. Tommy fad hooked it up for us, thanks again! Show went well, aside from the sound, the PA was just a bit too small, kept clipping. But as always Jon was hard out and the new setup between thomas and I is working out well… more on that as it works itself out. “Honey Claws is just the sort of thing I’d hope to run into at 1 A.M. my feet weary from the walking, my head hurting from all the rocking, but these grooves would buoy me up for another couple hours.”
Sean at 3hive just did a nice write-up on the album. Check it out at 3hive|Honey Claws. Thanks to Sean for checking out the music and the kind words. If you haven’t already checked out 3Hive’s site you’re sleeping.

First day out promoting. The cards are moving fast and we did our test sign-bombing. A few spots around town look promising. Look out for the posters. Their screen printed and limited edition, feel free to snag one. Here are some first impressions: SX have some tough fucking crowds, but in the face of that Til were blue or Destroy and Tokyo Police Club solidly rocked the Mohawk. We moved on over to Beauty Bar (Honey Claws’ favorite) to catch Flosstradamus. Sizzling beats and bouncing fans were definitely a step in the right direction. It was great to see the crowd into it and getting the fuck down.We closed out the night at the purevolume party, our friend Russel just rushed the door. Broke on through, leaving us to jump the fence in the back. Punk for sure, but we got caught, funny shit actually. Tomorrow we’ll be back… at Club 115, 1 am

So, SX is upon us and we missed the 1 post a day quota. Fuck it. Other things to do. Beats to write. Its my first time in Austin for this festival and its electric. The town is turned out and turned on. Odd, I lived here for 6 years and escaped every time SX came to town. Anyway, here are some shots from the night. Its a sort of welcome to Texas for all of you out there from other lands.
